Pickering Traction Engine Rally

This weekend sees the 62nd annual Pickering Traction Engine rally – a spectacular event hosting the biggest line of showmans engines and fairground organs ever seen in the North!

There will be over 1000 Vintage and Classic Cars, Commercials and Motorcycles, Arena Attractions, Three Live Stage Shows, Steam Yachts, Wall of Death, Steam Gallopers, Huge Modern Funfair, Sky TV Tractor Pulling, Over 100 Steam Rollers, Lorries and Agricultural Traction Engines, Over 400 Vintage Tractors, Static Working Engines, Steam Ploughing, Road Rolling, Giant Autojumble and Collectors Market, Fine Food & Craft Marquees, Bars & Live Bands, Miniature Steam Engines and Model Engineering Marquee.

STEAM PLOUGHING See two engines face each other and pull the drag (plough) on a wire rope over more than 50 metres. The two engines used in this display were built by Fowlers in Leeds and are 100 years old.

This display takes place at regular intervals throughout the event.

STEAM WORKING AREA Three Rack Sawbenches cutting up trees into useable lengths and five Threshing Sets driven by Steam Engines and Vintage Tractors

Another not to miss is the Ilson Crushers ROAD MAKING DISPLAY – see how it was done in the 50s!

There will be a fireworks spectacular on the Saturday night.

Enjoy free events and activities at the annual Moorland Festival – a great day out for the family in the place where moorland matters.

As the heart of the National Park begins to turn purple, spend the day discovering amazing moorland heritage. North York Moors National Park Rangers will introduce you to their work, and you’ll be able to hear all about moorland matters – from bee-keeping to dry-stone walling.

L1020662Meanwhile the Danelaw Living History Group brings the sights and smells of the North York Moors to life, with storytelling, face painting, food tasting and craft making.

Saltburn Food Festival

A TRIO of local food lovers will be passing on the tips of their trades with a series of tasty workshops at Saltburn Food Festival.JS41972342

Saltburn butcher Mike Gosnay will be helping people make their own sausages, Brotton based artisan baker Ed Trewhitt will be showing people how to put their own bread on the table, whileGuisborough couple Andy Lennox and Andrea Havard will be introducing festival goers to the benefits of an organic raw food lifestyle.

The free food festival takes place on Sunday, August 3 between 10am to 4pm on Milton Street.


Medieval Merriment at Jorvik

Returning for its third exciting instalment, The Yorkshire Medieval Festival is coming to take God’s own County back to the middle ages this summer!med-merii-banner

Organised by The JORVIK Group, creators of the famous JORVIK Viking Festival, The Yorkshire Medieval Festival brings with it a wide range of events and activities for all the family to enjoy across August.

This year the festival comes back home to York with ‘Medieval Merriment’ at Rowntree’s Park on 2nd and 3rd August. Let the little ones try their hand as an eagle-eyed archer, discover mighty birds of prey with falconry demonstrations & see brave knights battle in thrilling re-enactments. There will also be some hands-on crafts to get involved in.

Small archaeologists will also be encouraged to discover the middle-ages with a series of specially-themed ‘Little Diggers’ sessions at DIG – An Archaeological Adventure.

For those looking a little further afield discover Swords and Sieges at Knaresbrough Castle! Featuring medieval sword fighting workshops, tours of the castle and sallyport with tales of sieges, plus fun crafts and activities from claypot making to finger puppets and medieval flags!

There’s plenty for the adults to get involved in as well, from walking tours and talks on everything from Richard III to the Mystery Plays as well as our Church Explorers! programme, which takes in some of Yorkshire’s most beautiful medieval places of worship.
